The Weird Thing I Started Doing at My Desk That Actually Works

HuaYu (化育) incense is a traditional Chinese Kāi Yù (开郁) formula burned as a desk ritual to move stagnant Qi, lift afternoon mental fog, and create a scent-conditioned focus state. Containing agarwood, atractylodes, galangal, costus root, and clove, it is designed for desk workers who experience the specific heaviness of post-meeting cognitive fatigue — not sleepiness, but friction.

I want to tell you about the most judged thing I do at work. It's not a standing desk or a cold plunge. It's a small ceramic holder and a stick of Chinese herbal incense that I burn at my desk for thirty minutes around 2:30pm, every day I work from home.

My partner walked past once and said: 'Are you... doing a seance?' I was not doing a seance. I was trying to survive Tuesday.

The contex

I work in a job with lots of meetings, moderate ambiguity, and people who use the phrase 'let's circle back' non-ironically. The combination of back-to-back video calls and then immediately needing focused creative work was wrecking me by early afternoon. After a two-hour Zoom block, I felt like someone had pressed a pillow against my brain — present, technically, but muffled.

The standard advice — take a walk, drink water, breathe — helps in the moment and wears off in twelve minutes. What I needed was something that could shift the quality of the air in my workspace. Not just my state of mind, but the actual atmosphere of the place where I was trying to do the thing.

What I burn and why

The formula is a Kai Yu (开郁) blend — herbs chosen for their traditional association with moving stuck emotional energy, lifting a heavy or irritable mood, and clearing the fog that comes from too many words and too little movement.

Agarwood (沉香) is the base — deep, resinous, the smell of something old and settled. Sandalwood (檀香) sits underneath, warmer and creamier. Atractylodes (苍术) and Galangal (高良姜) carry a dry, almost gingery warmth — these are the herbs doing the actual Qi-moving work, dissolving the stagnation that pools in the gut and chest after hours of sitting still. Clove (丁香) adds a quiet spice that wakes the senses without spiking them. Together, this doesn't smell like productivity or calm. It smells like a workshop that also has a garden — purposeful, earthy, more deliberate than the attention my laptop requires.

The actual desk setup

Small ceramic holder, placed to my left. Window cracked two inches — enough for smoke to move rather than settle. One stick. No timer needed; the ritual naturally anchors the afternoon.

I do not stop working when I burn it. The incense is running alongside whatever I'm doing — a background signal to my nervous system: this hour is different from the Zoom hours. We are now in the making-things hour. Adjust accordingly.

Why it works (my completely non-medical theory)

There's a phenomenon called state-dependent memory — what you learned in a particular state of mind is more accessible when you're in that state again. Smell is one of the most powerful triggers for state retrieval, because of its direct connection to the limbic system.

What I've done — accidentally and then intentionally — is build a smell-conditioned focus state. When the sandalwood and mint start, my brain begins to anticipate focused work. Not because of magic — because of repetition. The smell is the cue. The cue triggers the state. The state allows the work.

The moment I knew I wasn't imagining it: I had a terrible morning — a miscommunication became a meeting, then a document, then another meeting to discuss the document. By 1pm I was the specific kind of tired that lives behind your eyes. I burned the incense at 2pm, an hour earlier than usual. By 3pm, I had drafted the piece I'd been stuck on for three days. Something had moved.

The incense: Vigor Nuwa HuaYu Incense — Agarwood (沉香), Sandalwood (檀香), Cypress (桧木), Sweetgum (枫香), Atractylodes (苍术), Spikenard (甘松), Galangal (高良姜), Costus Root (木香), Clove (丁香), Benzoin (安息香). ~22 sticks, 30–40 min each. The most consistent part of my workday, and also the weirdest-looking.

用的香:Vigor Nuwa 化育·醒脾开郁香 — 沉香、檀香、桧木、枫香、苍术、甘松、高良姜、木香、丁香、安息香。每管约22支,每支约30–40分钟。

What's your strangest-seeming work ritual that actually helps? I'm building a list.
